Organizational process assets can tell you how your company runs its projects.
It is said that “Why reinvent the wheel?” This saying is very self-explanatory. If something is already in place, then you don’t need to recreate it. e.g. If your organizations have a template for a project management plan that was created from the same type of project as they did a while ago. Is it wise for you to modify the template to suit your project or to create a new one?
Project managers and project management teams extensively use Organizational Process assets for project success.
Organizational process assets refer to the organization’s policies and guidelines, plan approaches, procedures, and working standards. These are the knowledge bases that are specific to and used in performing organizations. These artifacts include practice, knowledge, and other information from all the organizations involved in the project that can be used to manage or perform the project.
These processes also include knowledge bases, such as historical information and lessons learned. This includes many elements that could impact several aspects of the project. It includes completed schedules. EVM data, risk registers, EVM information, project management policies, safety policy, performance measurement criteria and templates. Financials and procedures used for authorizing work are also included. The project team keeps the organizational process assets up-to-date throughout the project.

Historical information can be used to prepare various documents such as project charters, project management plans, and other activities during the planning phase.
The planning group can use most of the historical information. Understanding past projects of similar nature will allow project managers to avoid making the same mistakes as in the past.
The organizational process assets are an input for many of the processes. Old assets will save you time and help you find a way that has worked in the past. This can also be used as a checklist to help project managers determine if they have completed all of the project processes.
